Everything You Shouldn't Be Allowed to Know About Shiranui Genma Name: Shiranui Genma Age: 22 Birthday: 17 July Rank outside ANBU: Special Jounin Affiliated with which ANBU branch: Hunter--Field Ops. Assassin. Field Medic. Registration Number: 010203
Physical Appearance Height: 181 cm (5'11") Weight: 76.6 kg (169 lbs) Blood Type: A Hair: Shoulder-length, shaggy and somewhat limp, tobacco-brown. His hair would be silky and smooth if he didn't wash it with harsh, scent-erasing products. As it is, it's a little coarse, with rough uneven ends. It's long enough to be pulled back into a fairly absurd, bob-tailed ponytail, but he usually wears it loose. His beard comes in in a redder shade, and only sparsely and slowly, creating a somewhat derelict looking goatee and mustache. He is usually clean-shaven.
Eyes: Serious and expressive under delicately scowling brows, deep-set and heavy-lidded, he usually looks like he's thinking bedroom thoughts - sometimes sexy ones, sometimes sleepy ones. They are an odd, light golden brown, some have even called them yellow, though he thinks that's going a bit far. The light irises under his heavy lids make for an arresting combination. He knows he can get what he wants with a sexy smile and a twinkle in his eye.
Skin: Fair and smooth. Genma is paler-skinned than many of his comrades. His cheeks flush red in wind and cold, but he usually tans rather than burns.
Facial Features: Genma's a handsome young man by any standard. He has an angular jaw, curving cheeks, and pouting lips, that he uses to full effect. He often has something in his mouth - a dango skewer, a cigarette, a senbon - anything, really, to highlight the movement of his lips and draw his viewers' eyes to his face. He's seen the hypnotic effect the wagging object can have on enemy and ally alike, and is more than willing to draw on that distraction.
Other Physical Traits: Like any ninja of his level, Genma is extremely fit. He works out with weights, spars with partners and runs to keep in shape when not on missions. He is relatively tall and lanky, a little on the thin side, but muscular and well-proportioned. Despite his attractiveness, Genma's capable of appearing very plain and unremarkable, mostly through body language. He's good at disappearing into a crowd, becoming nameless and faceless, skills that have helped him as a shinobi even more than his manipulative charm.
Handedness: Right handed, but reasonably adept with weapons in his left hand as well, through long practice.
Voice: Low tenor. Calm and understated. When he's angry, his voice grows quieter. His friends tell him to shut up when he tries to sing. Which he does, loudly, when drunk.
Identifying Marks: In addition to the ANBU tattoo on his left biceps, Genma has three, well-healed parallel scars on his right shoulder, and variety of scars on his body mostly acquired in combat. Most notably, his hands are heavily scarred, with knobby joints and a few somewhat crooked fingers as the result of having been badly broken while under torture. His hands still ache at times, sometimes quite badly.
Usual Clothing:Since his genin days he has had the habit of wearing his hitai-ate bandanna-style over his hair, and backwards, so that the protective metal plate cradles the back of his skull and the knotted ends of the scarf flop over his forehead like a mammy's rag.
When in civvies, Genma sticks to basics. Jeans, dark-colored, long-sleeve tees, sandals or boots, and a wide black belt. For clubbing, which he enjoys, he has even lower-slung jeans and a collection of billowy silk shirts that he leaves unbuttoned nearly to the navel, often worn with a necklace made of bone. There's speculation that the beads are segments of human finger bone, but Genma will neither confirm nor deny the rumor. He just smiles and says it brings him good luck.
ANBU Mask: Genma's ANBU mask is a simple, nondescript mammalian face. Some see in it a cat, some a dog, others a bear. Genma says it's a cougar. It has a softly protruding snout and curling red lines extending from the mouth to give it what seems like a gentle smile. The eyes are outlined in the same red. He enjoys the irony of wearing what looks like a children's festival mask to carry out assassinations.
Living Situation: Genma lives on the third floor of ANBU HQ, in apartment 320.
Ninja Skills Fighting Style: Genma is a ninjutsu specialist. He prefers to work with ranged attacks and weapons. He knows and readily uses an astonishing number and variety of ninjutsu, including some rather brutal metal-based assassination jutsu. While his abilities with taijutsu and genjutsu, his strength and stamina are all what one would expect of a shinobi of his level, it is his speed, his skill with seal weaving and his ninjutsu that make him a specialist.
Preferred Weapons: Genma's favorite weapons are senbon and kunai, preferably used in concert. He throws a few poison-tipped needles to paralyze his targets from a distance, then creeps up behind and quietly slits their throats.
He has a special interest in poisons, and has developed partial immunities to some of the more common ones. In the pursuit of this goal he's put himself in the hospital more times than he prefers to think about. His friends pretty much know that if they find him passed out somewhere, it's never safe to assume he's just had too much to drink and to let him sleep it off, especially if any of his senbon are out of their cases. They also know never to use one of Genma's needles as a coffee stirrer, never to pop one in their mouths the way he so casually does into his. What he can tolerate as a mildly bitter taste, a slightly benumbed tongue, would drop an uninitiated person like a fly.
Special Jutsu: Genma is a user of metal jutsu, one of only a few in Konoha. He can materialize metal in the air, often using his own or his victim's blood as a catalyst.
He also has a summoning contract with rats. The biggest rat he's managed to summon is Hoshi, a curly-haired black male the size of a small horse. The smallest rat he summons who speaks human language is Shinobu, a black and white little boy who's no bigger than your average street rat.
Service Record: Graduated from the Academy and became a Genin at age ten, under Jounin-sensei Kamizuki Kazuma. Genin teammates: Sago Daisuke, Obata Hisa. Promoted to Chuunin at thirteen. At fourteen he was attached to the Eros division and trained by Otoshi Amari in the art of seduction. For most of the war years, Genma ran eros-type missions. Promoted to Special Jounin at seventeen, he was on the front lines against the Kyuubi five years ago. Recruited for ANBU in the aftermath of the Kyuubi attack. Received training as an ANBU field medic. A year and a couple months after joining ANBU, Genma was captured and tortured by Iwagakure ninja, while on a sabotage mission. He survived, but the rest of his team did not.
Personality General Personality Traits: Genma often looks half asleep, but never seems to miss a single thing that is going on. Fundamentally a calm person, he observes diligently and patiently before taking action, but action is still his watchword. Once he's made up his mind to act, Genma acts without hesitation. He has little patience for talk and debate, and trusts what a man does, not what he says.
When he's not fading into the background observing, he's the life of the party. Flirting. Joking. Teasing. Mentoring junior colleagues both on and off duty. He's got a strong protective streak, and an inclination to teach and guide: he's the cool older brother you wish you'd had. Calm, collected, deliberate and a little unpredictable, he's a charismatic and intriguing man.
Genma effortlessly, almost unconsciously oozes a sort of raw sexuality, and he is rumored to be willing to sleep with anything that moves. Well, anything human, anyway. It doesn't matter where he is, Genma will stand at a club, in the cafeteria, in the training room, on a mission, hip-shot and grinning, with whatever he has between his lips at the moment waving around, just screaming "come hither and let me take you in my mouth." Women flock to him. Men flock to him. No one is immune to the animal appeal of the man. And he's actually a pretty decent lover. He likes sex and is there for his own pleasure, but he likes his partners (male and female) to enjoy it at least as much as he does. At least half his excitement comes from knowing he made his partner writhe and moan with desire.
Though he seems a bit of a will-o-the-wisp, Genma in mission-mode, with his battle-face on, is another man entirely. When the situation calls for it he's serious and focused. The wheels of his mind turn relatively quickly, and in the field he's thought of as someone who can be trusted to make snap decisions. He would never leave a comrade behind if he could help it.
Quirks: Wears his hitai-ate backwards. Usually has something in his mouth, often a senbon. In his personal life, Genma's not really what you'd call an orderly person. He barely gets his bills payed on time, always has at least six projects running simultaneously, and is easily persuaded to take on something new, so long as he finds it interesting. He gets bored fairly quickly, often abandoning projects once he's worked out the major details. He has an interest in travel and collects foreign erotica.
Motto: "Actions speak louder than words." & "There's no such thing as cheating at being a ninja." A phrase his jounin-sensei taught him, which he took deeply to heart.
Sexual Orientation: Openly bisexual. Almost equally oriented towards men and women.
Gifts/Talents: Natural leader. Good at getting people to talk, and a good listener. Generally gives good advice. Plays the biwa (badly). Good kisser. Can do amazing things with his tongue. Can turn anything into an innuendo. Makes even brushing his teeth seem sexy. Fantastic dancer.
Flaws: Moody, masochistic when he's grieving, drinks too heavily, evasive, uses sex to keep people from getting too close, slightly paranoid, very touchy about his hands, too self-sacrificing on missions, ignores his health and medical advice, tends to be insubordinate.
Religion and Philosophy:Buddhist/Shinto. Genma is religious, though he's relatively private about it. He has a little cluster of memorial tablets: one for his mother, one for his father, one for his big sister Yumiko and one for his baby sister Haruko. He rescued the remains of the family shrine from the smoldering ruins of their house after Kyuubi's attack, and it now sits in his apartment. He places fresh offerings there once a week, and burns incense and says prayers at the appropriate times. But if you asked him if he believed in life after death, he'd laugh at you.
As for philosophy, if his experiences so far in life have taught him anything, it is to live in the moment for the here and now, because the past is a burden and the future is no guarantee.
Likes and Loves: Tea, travel books, sex, stewed kabocha, teasing and flirting, the men's showers, shouchuu, getting pleasantly drunk with friends, a good spar.
Dislikes and Hates: Pitch darkness, having his hands touched unexpectedly, torture, seeing a friend hurt, puking, spinach.
Fears: Torture, losing his abilities as a ninja.
Dreams and Ambitions: To serve Konoha in ANBU, maybe one day become a jounin-sensei like Kazuma-sense.
Relationships Family: Most of Genma's family are deceased. His Grandfather, Shiranui Genichi, was a medic, serving under Shodai in the early days of Konoha's founding. His father, Shiranui Yuuichi, died on a mission when Genma was seven. His mother, Etsuko, died when he was thirteen. He had two sisters, Yumiko, a medic, five years older than Genma, and Haruko, four years younger than him. Both sisters were killed in the Kyuubi attack on the village five years ago.
Friends: Closest friend is Namiashi Raidou, a fellow agent with whom he often takes missions. Friends and fuck buddies with Kaneko Yanagi and Akiyama Rina. Only a very few people, those with perseverance enough to force Genma to keep his focus on them, remain his friends long term, but he would leap into the hell of burning lava to save them without a second thought.
Lovers: Many and varied, and most don't last more than a few dates. He's enjoyed a casual, "friends with benefits" arrangement with more than a few of his comrades, including Sakamoto Ginta, Akiyma Rina, and Kaneko Yanagi, but no one has ever captured him long term.
Enemies: Highly suspicious of most of the people who work in T&I. Has had some uncomfortable confrontations with Hatake Kakashi (and thinks he's a total tool). Respects but detests Shida Akumaru.
Hero: His jounin sensei Kamizuki Kazuma, Sandaime, his grandfather.
Personal History: Genma's parents were ninja, both killed in the line of duty by the time he was thirteen. His father died when he was seven, his mother in one of the early attacks by the Kyuubi. She didn't die immediately, but lingered in the hospital in a coma for weeks. Genma prayed nightly for her death but was wracked with guilt when it finally came.
Genma had two sisters, both also now dead. His older sister, Yumiko, was a medical ninja, who took over the household and raising of her siblings when their mother died. She was rigid and stern beyond her years, and Genma always felt a keen pressure to live up to the standard she set, but he rebelled against her authority. Rules without reasons chafed him in a way he could never quite explain, and he was forever running afoul of Yumiko's temper. He craved nothing so much as her affection and approval, but would never stoop so low as to actively seek it.
His younger sister, Haruko, wanted to be a ninja, but was born with cerebral palsy and was unable to attend the academy due to her disability. Genma was a doting older brother. He taught Haruko ninjutsu and brought her trinkets from his missions, never seeing her as less capable despite her crippled body. Where to Yumiko he was a rebellious troublemaker, to Haruko he was the sun, moon and stars.
His mother had been no traditionalist when it came to gender roles, but he still felt, as the only boy, that when his father died he inherited the mantle of "man of the house" and tried to live up to it. When his mother died, he pushed himself even harder to step into the role, a fantasy he didn't really even understand. He graduated the academy at 10, and became a chuunin at 13, during the war. At 14 he was attached to the Eros division and trained by Otoshi Amari in the art of seduction. For most of the war years, Genma ran eros-type missions. At 17 he was promoted to Special Jounin.
It wasn't long after that that the Demon Fox attacked the village. Genma was returning from a mission and saw the flames. He and his team rushed to join the fight, doing their best to hold the line until Yondaime could come. He was caught by a vicious ninjutsu and seriously injured, knocked out. He came to briefly to hear his sister, the medic, giving orders to have him moved. He remembers seeing her face, blood and tear streaked, and reaching for her hand. When he woke again it was almost a day later, and she and his younger sister were both dead.
Genma was recruited for ANBU while still recovering from his injuries from fighting the Fox. He received additional training in assassination and field medicine. A year into his service he was captured and extensively tortured by enemy shinobi. Thanks to the hard work of his medics, and Genma's own determination, he recovered and returned to active duty only a few months after his rescue.
For now Genma's happy in ANBU. He likes and is good at stealth assassination and seduction. He figures he'll probably leave ANBU sometime in his mid-20s, maybe even take on Jounin Sensei responsibilities, but he's not too worried about that.
Special Notes: Genma, as noted above, was captured and tortured four years ago, and the event left more than physical scars. Both teammates, Kamiyama Kobo and Hoashi Seijuro, were killed: Kobo taking a blade meant for Genma, and Seijuro before Genma's eyes as an inducement to get Genma to talk. Since then he's been especially adamant about the safety of his teammates, to the point of dangerous self-sacrifice when in the position of mission commander.
He was held in utter isolation and darkness, almost pure sensory deprivation, for longer than he could keep track (several weeks). As a result, he has a fairly strong dislike for pitch blackness. If a mission requires him to spend time hiding in shadows, that's one thing, but trap him in a small dark space for too long and he starts to lose it. At home he sleeps with a small light burning.
The other thing that that mission left him with is a flinchyness about his hands. His captors systematically broke the bones in his hands and fingers, both in an attempt to compel information from him and other Leaf nin held captive, who were made to watch, and to prevent his using his hands to form seals and mold chakra. Physically the only real remnants of the injuries are the scars and his knuckles' tendencies to ache and swell in cold or damp weather. Psychologically, Genma can't stand to have his hands touched. If he touches you, it's alright, but woe betide him who grabs Genma's hand, or knocks it accidentally. Those who know Genma, know better than to bring it up -– he'll change from his laid-back, easy-going self into a pissed-off, paranoid, and dangerous adversary over that topic.
